The strong overnight north east winds had brought cooler water to the near shore. The Walleye fishing has really slowed down to almost a standstill. There is no lack of fish; however, with both Elk and Walnut putting up good numbers. They were out in 68 ft of water off Elk Creek and he caught it on a Renosky Fire Tiger lure. Winter is a terrific time to fish the tribs if you prepare for the cold weather and the ice water. Here are three friends who came up to Walnut Creek on a trip that was planned for thirteen years. Migrant walleye have slowly begun to move into our waters and action is picking up somewhat but things are still a bit slow with water temperatures still pretty cold. When the lake is calm, anglers have been doing well in 52 feet of water due North of the Walnut Creek Access. Be sure to check ice thickness carefully. Other boats were doing much better. Report: Started at day break trolling in front of Walnut. The boat they were in caught two limits. The color was Black. He caught it in 65 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek on a worm. This is subject to change because they do an update at 4 am, 10 am, 4 pm and 10 pm. They brought in a couple for Angler Award. Seventy year old Freeman Rathfon of Mifflinburg, PA came in with this nice 10 pound Steelhead. Mickey McBride of Erie came in with this nice Walleye. with good numbers schooling up at similar depths North of the point at Presque Isle. Townville, PA resident, nine year old Cameron Ward brought in a 1 pound 1 ounce Perch for Junior Award. using large Rapellas in rainbow, silver, and fire tiger patterns are the ticket. Boats must still be 23' x 8' though. Eleven year old Autumn Anderson came in with a nice Angler Award sized Walleye. They each weighed 8 pounds 14 ounces. Rich Wilcko of Erie, PA brought in a couple Walleye for weighing for an Angler Award. A lighted float can help detect those subtle strikes. Here is six year old Sammy Ruhlman of Warren Pa. with her Angler Award sized Perch. The fishermen are out fishing into the lake from the stone jetties out front of Walnut Creek. West County tributary conditions as of this writing were up and flowing well. The only place boaters seem to be able to pick any up are in 60-70 ft of water west of Elk Creek. 10 minuets later the fish was in the boat. Anglers are still catching a good number of short fish to get a few legal size walleye. Perch are being caught straight out in 50 - 60 ft of water off Walnut Creek and also off Godfrey Run. She was straight out of Walnut Creek in 40 ft of water. Thirteen year old Edmund Pyska brought in a 1 lb -3 oz Perch for Junior Award. After the end of November, it starts slowing down a bit. Six year old Tyler Green of New Castle, PA brought in this 8 pound 6 ounce Walleye. I was told they are biting very lightly. Conditions: A fair number of fresh steelhead in the 15' to 20" range, or "jacks" as they are often called, have moved into the lower stretches of Elk and Walnut Creeks. The question all weekend was "where are the perch?" The season is by no means over. Sunday one fellow told me he landed 30 and more than that in misses. 14 oz. Anglers have been picking up perch along the south sideof the Bay as well as off the North and South piers. Lukes fish was 7 lb 10 oz, 27 inches long and 16 inch girth. The creeks are low and clear. One of the best baits for bass are live crayfish available at some bait shops. I will be here on December 21 but just to close up for the season. Walleye fishing has been productive on the Tionesta pool of the Allegheny River. And last but not least is seven year old Lauren Mummert, their little sister. We have found some schools and will go after them very soon. Area tribs have dropped with nearly all of the snow run off complete. He caught it on a Little Cleo. Nine year old Jaiden Miller of Buffalo N.Y. brought in a 7 pound 10 ounce fish that was 29 inches long and had a girth of 16 inches. When they are on, they are catching like crazy. It was a female that weighed 8 pounds 12 ounces. Nine year old Nicholas Langford of Erie came in for an Angler Award for his Perch. Their color was Chartreuse. Get there early and have fun! He caught it at the Water falls in Walnut Creek on sucker spawn. Catching these bronze backs on light tackle drifting is fantastic action. Please be courteous and when launching Please pull your boats all the way back so others can launch. He also caught this 8 pound 13 ounce fish that was 29 inches long and had a girth of 17 inches. With some light rain, a bit high and murky water, fishing was decent until a guy holding a hunting rifle chased around people fishing on creek warning them they are disturbing his hunting field. It looks like it might stick though but it is supposed to be in the Hi 30s tomorrow so I dont see it sticking for long. Carp are the number one game fish in many European countries and have just started to gain popularity here. The weedy areas near shore in the Lagoons, particularly near the canoe livery at Presque Isle is are a good place to try. The Perch seem to be doing pretty good out this way off and on. This can be a good place to try your luck for crappie, perch, and sunfish. I know they are getting them but no one is bringing them in for pictures.
